Located on the northwest coast of Borneo facing the South China Sea. Kota Kinabalu is the capital of Sabah state in Malaysia and is also the capital of the West Coast Division of Sabah. The Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park lies on one side and Mount Kinabalu, which gave the city its name, is nearby. Kota Kinabalu is often known as K.K. within Malaysia and internationally.

Kota Kinabalu's climate borders between a tropical monsoon climate and a tropical rainforest climate. Temperature variation throughout the year is small. However, April and May are generally the hottest months, while December and January are often the coolest.
