Located in southern California, on the Pacific coast, Long Beach is the 38th –largest city in the nation and the sixth-largest in California. The city completely surrounds the city of Signal Hill. Long Beach has a large oil industry, and has grown with the development of high-technology and aerospace industries in the area.
Since the arrival of Europeans, many alien species have become naturalized in the area. Many plants now far outnumber the indigenous plants and spread rapidly in the city's vacant lots and oil fields. The city and its residents have initiatives underway to preserve and reclaim a small part of its ecological heritage.
